Awards, Appointments, Announcements

LaSalle D. Leffall, M.D., was named national Cancer Fighter of the Year by the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, Long Beach, Calif. Leffall was selected based on his leadership in cancer prevention, treatment, and education.

Leffall is a professor of surgery at Howard University College of Medicine, Washington, D.C. He was the first African-American president of the American Cancer Society and the American College of Surgeons.

Pediatric Oncologists Honored

Two pediatric oncologists were honored with the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Clinical Research Award for their contributions to childhood cancer research.

G. Denman Hammond, M.D., is professor of pediatrics and associate vice president of health affairs at the University of Southern California, Arcadia. Hammond is president and chief executive officer of the Foundation for the Children’s Oncology Group.

Sharon B. Murphy, M.D., is professor of pediatrics at the Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, and chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Memorial Hospital. She is on the board of directors of the Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups, Inc.

Roeder receives Dickson Prize

Robert G. Roeder, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2001 Dickson Prize in Medicine by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Roeder is a professor and head of the Laboratory of Biochemical and Molecular Biology at Rockefeller University in New York.

He was awarded the Dickson Prize for his discovery and analysis of proteins involved in transcription.

Pechet Joins Jefferson Hospital

Taine T.V. Pechet, M.D., has joined Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Department of Surgery as a thoracic surgeon. The hospital is located in Philadelphia.

Pechet recently completed a thoracic surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. His research interests include lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and benign chest disorders.

Cohen Named

The Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, appointed Roger B. Cohen, M.D., phase I clinical trials director.

Cohen was previously at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where he was an associate professor of hematology/oncology and director of the cancer center clinical trials office. Cohen’s research focuses on clinical trial design and analysis.

Bartlett Appointed

David L. Bartlett, M.D., has been appointed chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center.

Bartlett was a senior investigator in the Center for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute. There, he developed new surgical techniques to deliver treatment for abdominal and liver cancer patients.

Scott Joins Fox Chase

Walter J. Scott, M.D., a thoracic surgeon, joined Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Department of Surgical Oncology.

Scott was previously an associate professor in both the Department of Surgery and the Department of Preventative Medicine and Public Health at Creighton University School of Medicine Center, Omaha, Neb.

Foundation Changes Name

The National Childhood Cancer Foundation has changed its name to the Foundation for the Children’s Oncology Group.

The foundation provides support for the Children’s Oncology Group, which was formed from the recent merger of four childhood cancer research groups. The foundation’s new Web site is http://www.ConquerKidsCancer.org.
