National Nanotechnology Initiative
The Clinton administration launched a National Nanotechnology Initiative in the fiscal year that began in October 1996. The National Science Foundation is the NNIs lead agency. Seven other federal agenciesincluding the National Institutes of Health and the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Energy, and Justiceare also participants. So are the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Bush administrations fiscal year 2002 budget request for the entire project is almost $519 million, 23% more than the $422 million that Congress approved for the purpose a year ago. Worth noting is that Japan and several European countries are generously investing in nanotechnology, too.
NSF and the Department of Defense received $150 million and $110 million, respectively, from NNI last year. NIH received $39 million and, if next years request is approved, will get $45 million in 2002.
