Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, received the 2001 Frank Annunzio Award in the Humanitarian Field from the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, an independent federal government agency.

The Annunzio awards are presented annually to living Americans whose thinking has led to creative work, process, product or other achievement that has had a significant and beneficial impact on society.

Fauci became director of NIAID in 1984.

Jordan Honored

V. Craig Jordan, Ph.D., D.Sc., received the 3rd Breast Cancer Award from the European Institute of Oncology, Milan.

Jordan is the Diana, Princess of Wales Professor of Cancer Research at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago. The award recognizes Jordan’s achievement of the development of tamoxifen and his work with selective estrogen receptor modulators.

Komen Foundation Recognized

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and its president and chief executive officer Susan Braun received the Frances Williams Preston Award for Breast Cancer Awareness from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer, Nashville.

The award is given annually to recognize efforts in breast cancer awareness, outreach and advocacy. The Komen Foundation is the largest source of private funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs. Its trademark event is the Komen Race for the Cure, a series of 5K runs/fitness walks in 115 cities in the United States and Europe.

Braun has been president and CEO of the organization since 1996.

Young Named President

Robert C. Young, M.D., was selected to be the national president of the American Cancer Society.

Young has been the president of Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, for 14 years. He will maintain his position at the cancer center during his 1-year term as president.

Young serves on the Board of Scientific Advisers of the National Cancer Institute, and he is a past president of both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society.

Byrd Appointed

The Life Sciences Research Office in Bethesda, Md., recently appointed Daniel M. Byrd, Ph.D., as its deputy director.

Prior to his new appointment, Byrd managed Consultants in Toxicology, Risk Assessment and Product Safety, a scientific support firm in Washington, D.C.

LSRO is a nonprofit, science-based organization that provides information, analysis and advice to policy and decision makers in the public and private sectors.

Moses Elected

Harold Moses, M.D., Benjamin F. Byrd Professor of Oncology and director of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Nashville, was recently elected as vice president and president-elect of the Association of American Cancer Institutes.

He will serve 2 years in this role followed by 2 years as president of the organization, which includes more than 80 centers.

Research Funding Available

The National Brain Tumor Foundation is accepting applications for its 2002 Research Allocations. The grants are designated to fund a variety of neuroscience research topics, including translational research, quality of life, pediatric brain tumors, complementary and alternative medicine, and epidemiology.

The grants range from $5,000 to $100,000. The application deadline is February 1, 2002. More information and application materials are available at http://www.braintumor.org

Nominations Sought

Nominations are being accepted for the 2002 Múcio Athayde Cancer Prize.

The prize will be awarded to a candidate who has made a major discovery or significant contribution with a global impact in basic research or clinical investigation, cancer control, or epidemiology.

The recipient will receive a $100,000 cash award.
