Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The International Myeloma Foundation presented its annual recognition awards in October:
William C. Pearson, vice president of the Strategic Consumer Group at Ortho Biotech, was honored with the Quality of Life Award.
James A. Bianco, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Cell Therapeutics Inc., and Julian Adams, Ph.D., and Michael Kauffman, M.D., of Millenium Pharmaceuticals Inc., were given the Ribbon of Hope Award.
Rudolf L. Brutoco, M.D., of the Life-Savers Foundation of America, was honored with the Courage Award.
The ceremony also honored Michael S. Katz, an 11-year survivor of multiple myeloma. Katz was honored for his commitment to the myeloma community and to the International Myeloma Foundation. Katz is also a member of the National Cancer Institute Directors Consumer Liaison Group.
Wittliff Recognized
The American Association for Clinical Chemistry recognized James L. Wittliff, Ph.D., for outstanding contributions to clinical chemistry in a selected area of research.
Wittliff is professor and chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Louisville. He was recognized for his research on the molecular endocrinology of human cancer.
Scholarship Awarded
The Oncology Care Systems Group of Siemens Medical Solutions, Concord, Calif., has awarded its third annual Siemens Scholar Award to Eric B. Corona-LoMonaco.
The award is given in cooperation with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. The program is designed to assist students who are members of ASRT in obtaining a baccalaureate or graduate degree in radiation therapy or health sciences.
In January, Corona-LoMonaco launched a non-profit greeting card company titled "Cards for Hope" with all proceeds going to benefit patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He is the supervisor of radiation oncology at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and he is continuing his studies at St. Josephs College of Maine.
Fox Chase Appoints Two
Alan Pollack, M.D., Ph.D., has been named chairman of radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia.
Pollack was previously at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, where he headed the Genitourinary Section of the Radiation Oncology Department and was associate medical director of the genitourinary treatment center.
Pollack succeeded Gerald E. Hanks, M.D., who retired last summer.
David S. Weinberg, M.D., was named director of gastroenterology at Fox Chase Cancer Center. He holds a dual appointment as a member of the Divisions of Medical Science and Population Science.
Weinberg went to Fox Chase after 6 years on the faculty of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. He was director of clinical research for Jefferson Medical Colleges Division of Gastroenterology and was an associate professor of medicine.
Deisseroth Named
Albert B. Deisseroth M.D., Ph.D., was named president and chief executive officer of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, La Jolla, Calif.
Deisseroth was previsously at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he was director of the Genetic Therapy Program, chief of the Section of Medical Oncology, and associate director for clinical research of the Yale Cancer Center. Deisseroth is also president of the International Society for Gene Therapy.
The Kimmel Cancer Center is a private, independent research institute affiliated with Sharp HealthCare.
CEO, President, CEO Appointed
Lorus Therapeutics Inc., Toronto, appointed Jim A. Wright, Ph.D., as its chief executive officer and Raafat Fahim, Ph.D., as president and chief operating officer.
Wright has been president of Lorus since 1999 when the company merged with GeneSense Technologies Inc., of which he was a cofounder.
Fahim joined Lorus from Aventis Pasteur, formerly Pasteur Merieux Connaught Canada, where he was vice president of industrial operations.
Lorus is a biopharmaceutical company that specializes in research, development, and commercialization of pharmaceutical products and technologies for cancer.
Professors Named
The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Institute at the Ohio State University, Columbus, recently announced two new appointments.
Stephen P. Povoski, M.D., joined the Division of Surgical Oncology as an associate professor of surgery. Povoski was an assistant professor of surgery and of radiology at West Virginia University.
Kari Kendra, M.D., joined the Division of Hematology and Oncology as an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. She was the director of the Biotherapeutics Core Facility at the University of Rochester Cancer Center.
Pittsburgh Makes Apointments
Charles R. Pound, M.D., has been appointed assistant professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Pound will also be a member of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institutes Prostate and Urologic Cancer Center. He went to Pittsburgh from the University of Tennessee where he was an assistant professor of urology.
David Roodman, M.D., Ph.D., has been named director of the Multiple Myeloma Center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
He also has appointments as professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and as director of the Center for Bone Biology at the Universitys Health System.
Roodman was previously the associate chair for research in the Department of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Two Chiefs Named at Sloan-Kettering
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, recently made two appointments.
Peter G. Cordeiro, M.D., has been appointed chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service. He has been acting chief of that division since January, and he has been at Sloan-Kettering since 1992.
W. Douglas Wong, M.D., was named chief of the Colorectal Service. Wong has been with Sloan-Kettering since 1997.
