NEWS

Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Harold Varmus, M.D., president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, received the Vannevar Bush Award for lifetime achievement in science and public service.

Varmus, a Nobel laureate, is the former director of the National Institutes of Health. The award is presented by the National Science Board and is named for the former director of the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development.

Pandolfi Honored

Pier Paolo Pandolfi, Ph.D., was presented with the Sergio Lombroso Award in Cancer Research.

Pandolfi is the head of the Sloan-Kettering Institute’s Molecular and Developmental Biology Laboratory.

The award is given by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel to members of the international scientific community who have made significant contributions to the understanding of cancer or its treatment.

New Investigator Award Given

Guenahel Danet, Ph.D., hematology/oncology research associate in the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, received the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation/Merck New Investigator Award.

The award is a $25,000-per-year grant for investigations in the field of blood and marrow transplantation. Danet’s proposed research will characterize a subset of marrow-derived stem cells that can grow into either blood cells or liver cells.

The award is sponsored by ASBMT in collaboration with Merck & Co. Inc.

Brinker Named Ambassador

Nancy Goodman Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has been named U.S. ambassador to Hungary.

President Bush nominated her for the position in May, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmed the nomination in August.

Brinker has served on government panels under three U.S. presidents. In 1986, President Reagan appointed her to the 18 member National Cancer Advisory Board. In 1990, she was appointed by President George H. W. Bush to the President’s Cancer Panel, which monitors the progress of the National Cancer Program. Additionally, she was invited by Vice President Dan Quayle to chair a subcommittee monitoring research, progress, and development in the fight against breast cancer. In 2000, she became a member of the National Steering Committee for the National Dialogue on Cancer.

Fisher Named

The University of Rochester Medical Center appointed Richard I. Fisher, M.D., director of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and director of Cancer Services for Strong Health.

He was also appointed chief of the Hematology/Oncology Unit in the Department of Medicine and the Samuel E. Durand Professor of Medicine.

Fisher had been director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Chicago, since 1984.

Paskett Named

Electra Diane Paskett, Ph.D., has been named associate director for population sciences at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbus.

Paskett will also be a professor in the School of Public Health and will direct the diversity enhancement program at the Center’s James Cancer Hospital.

Prior to her new position, Paskett was the program director of the Cancer Control Program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University School of Medicine and an associate professor in the Department of Pubic Health Sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She is the chair of the Cancer Control and Health Outcomes Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B.

Roswell Names Faculty

Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y., has made two recent faculty appointments.

Joseph Geradts, M.D., was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He was previously at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, University of Oxford and John Radcliffe hospital, Oxford. His research focuses on molecular pathology of breast and lung cancer, the pathobiological and clinical significance of differential gene expression in solid tumors, and application of modern techniques in diagnostic pathology.

William L. Giese, M.D., J.D., joined the Department of Radiation Medicine. He will work with the divisions of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Breast Surgery. His research interests include brachytherapy, the interrelation of imaging data in the design of irradiation fields, the combination of localized hyperthermia with systemic chemotherapy and locoregional irradiation; and evolving methods of tumor identification.

Sieber Leaves NCI

Susan Sieber, Ph.D., retired last month after 30 years of service with the National Cancer Institute.

Sieber was most recently director of the Office of Communications. She began her work at NCI as a post-doctoral fellow. She has served as acting chief of the Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology, deputy director of the Division of Cancer Etiology, deputy director of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, acting director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences, and associate director of Special Projects in the Office of the Director.

Mary McCabe, director of the Office of Education and Special Initiatives, will serve as the acting director of the Office of Communications.

New CEO Named

Avtar Dhillon, M.D., was appointed president and chief executive officer of Genetronics Inc., San Diego.

Dhillon was most recently vice president of MDS Capital Corp., a venture capital firm focused on health care and life sciences companies. He is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the College of Family Practitioners, and the British Columbia and Canadian Medical Associations.

Genetronics specializes in targeted intracellular delivery of large-molecule therapeutics.

Movsas Appointed

Benjamin Movsas, M.D., has been named vice chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia.

Dr. Benjamin Movsas

 
Movsas joined Fox Chase in 1995 and was most recently director of clinical research and thoracic radiotherapy in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He is the chairman of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group’s Quality of Life Committee and the Patterns of Care Lung Committee.
