Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The Endocrine Society awarded six researchers the Abbott Thyroid Research Clinical Fellowship and Mentor Award.

The recipients were Takao Ando, M.D., Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York; Shinichiro Ando, M.D., Ph.D., National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; Andrew Bauer, M.D., Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Md., Masahiro Kaneshige, M.D., Ph.D., National Cancer Institute; Pnina Rotman-Pikielny, M.D., National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; and Nobuyuki Shibusawa, M.D., University of Chicago.

The awards were given to researchers of clinically relevant aspects of thyroid disease. Each fellow received $1000.

Annual Awards Presented

The American Foundation for Urologic Disease presented several awards at its 2001 annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

Amgen Pharmaceuticals and Praecis Pharmaceuticals were presented with the Presidential Award. This award is given to individuals and corporations who have helped expand research education, public awareness, and advocacy of urologic diseases.

Frank Hinman Jr., M.D., University of California at San Francisco, received a lifetime achievement award. Bruce Devlin, Senior PGA Tour member, received a Presidential Award for his support of the "On the Course for Bladder Health" campaign. Ash Adams, a prostate cancer survivor, received an award for his work in the prostate cancer survivor community.

Richard Turner-Warwick, M.D., of the United Kingdom, received the F. Brantley Scott Award for his contributions to the specialty of urology.

Noel E. Sankey, M.D., Denver, Colo., received the Dornier Innovative Research Award for supporting the research objectives of the foundation.

Jerome P. Richie, M.D., received the Russell Scott Award for contributions to the field of postgraduate continuing medical education. Richie is the chairman of the Urology Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Three Join Roswell Staff

Three doctors have joined the staff of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y.

Rita K. Kramer, M.D., and Jimmy D. Taylor, M.D., have been appointed to the Department of Medicine.

Kramer was previously an associate professor of medicine at the A.B. Chandler Medical Center, University of Kentucky at Lexington. Taylor was on the oncology staff of the MidAtlantic Kaiser-Permanente Medical Group.

Also, Kunle Odunsi, M.D., Ph.D., was appointed to Roswell’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Surgery. Odunsi is also an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

AACR Accepting Nominations

The American Association for Cancer Research is accepting nominations for honorary awards that recognize outstanding achievement in cancer research. Winners will present a scientific lecture at the 93rd AACR Annual Meeting in 2002.

The awards are: the AACR-American Cancer Society Award for Research Excellence in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention; the AACR-Joseph H. Burchenal Clinical Research Award; the AACR-Bruce F. Cain Memorial Award; the AACR-G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award; the AACR-DeWitt S. Goodman Memorial Lectureship; the AACR-Pezcoller International Award for Cancer Research; the AACR-Cornelius P. Rhoads Award; the AACR-Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award; and the AACR-Women in Cancer Research Charlotte Friend Memorial Lectureship.
