Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The American Cancer Society presented its Medal of Honor to three people at the organization’s annual meeting in Chicago.

The award in clinical research went to Ronald Levy, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Oncology in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif. He is also an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor.

The basic research award was presented to Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Ph.D. Blackburn joined the faculty of the University of California at San Francisco in 1990 as a professor in both the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. She chaired the Department of Microbiology and Immunology from 1993 to 1999. She is a past president of the American Society for Cell Biology.

The medal for contributions to cancer control was presented to Harold P. Freeman, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Harlem’s North General Hospital, as well as its director of surgery. He was recently appointed to his fourth term as chairman of the President’s Cancer Panel. In addition, Freeman was recently appointed associate director of the National Cancer Institute and the director of its Center for Reducing Health Disparities.

Goldspiel Honored

Barry R. Goldspiel, Pharm.D., received the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States Award for Clinical Excellence in Clinical Pharmacy Practice at its 107th Annual meeting in November.

Goldspiel is projects coordinator and oncology clinical pharmacy specialist in the pharmacy department at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center.

This award recognizes a leadership role of federal pharmacists in the transformation of pharmacy practice by working closely with other health care providers to optimize pharmacotherapies in a safe, efficacious, and cost-effective manner.

Society Elects Officials

The International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners recently announced the results of its election for 2000–2002.

Barry Goldspiel, Pharm.D., oncology clinical pharmacy specialist at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, Bethesda, Md., was elected president-elect;

Simone Melzer, clinical pharmacist, with A.K. Harburg, Hamburg, Germany, was elected treasurer; and

Jude Lees, B.Pharm., Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia, was elected secretary.

Thomas Garms, clinical pharmacist with A.K. Harburg; Rowena Schwartz, Pharm.D., of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute; Graham Sewell, Ph.D., University of Bath, United Kingdom; and Maria José Tamés, hospital pharmacy specialist at the Instituto Oncologico, San Sebastian, Spain, are the new secretariat members. The newly elected officials join Larry Broadfield of Cancer Care Nova Scotia, Halifax, who was installed as president at the annual meeting in Prague, Czech Republic.

Durovich Named

Christopher Durovich has joined the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center as vice president for hospital and clinic operations.

Durovich is responsible for managing M. D. Anderson’s expanding patient care operations. He is tasked with improving the efficiency and effectiveness of M. D. Anderson’s hospital and outpatient clinic operations.
