Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Daniel Haber, M.D., Ph.D., of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and Harvard Medical School, Boston, was the recipient of the American Association for Cancer Research National Foundation for Cancer Research Professorship in Basic Cancer Research.The 2-year professorship was developed to recognize a scientist who has demonstrated extraordinary achievement in basic cancer research.
"Dr. Habers research of the ataxia telangiectasia genetic disease is an important study of the link between childrens genetic diseases and the risk of a mothers early development of breast cancer," said NFCR Science Director Sujuan Ba, Ph.D.
Sharrer Elected
The National Foundation for Cancer Research, Bethesda, Md., elected G. Terry Sharrer, Ph.D., as its chairman of the board of directors. Sharrer is curator of health sciences at the Smithsonian Institutions National Museum of American History.
The Foundation also named Lorie Karnath and Kevin A. Connolly to its board of directors.
Leischow Appointed
Scott Leischow, Ph.D., has been appointed chief of the Tobacco Control Research Branch in the Behavioral Research Program in the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute. The appointment is effective July 2.

Leischow is the director of the Arizona Program for Nicotine and Tobacco Research, co-director of the Biobehavioral Oncology Research Program at the Arizona Cancer Center, and associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Arizona, Tuscon.
Barrett Joins NCI
J. Carl Barrett, Ph.D., has been appointed director of the Division of Basic Sciences at the National Cancer Institute. Prior to joining NCI, he was the scientific director of intramural research at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Barrett replaces acting director Alan S. Rabson, M.D.
EORTC Elects President
The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer has elected Allan T. van Oosterom, Ph.D., as its new president.
van Oosterom is the head of the Department of Oncology at the University Hospital of Leuven, Belgium, and professor of oncology at the University of Leuven.
Call for Nominations
The National Cancer Institute is accepting nominations for the Eleanor Nealon Extraordinary Communicators Lecture Series.
The series will feature outstanding communicators from technology, business, academia, and the media who have advanced the science of communications and promoted the understanding of science.
The series is named in honor of Nealon, who was an 18-year employee of the NCI where she helped establish the Office of Liaison Activities. For more information, contact Dianne Needham, 301-594-6811, or needhamd{at}mail.nih.gov. The deadline for the first lecture series nomination is June 1, 2000.
