Dr. Patricia Ganz

Ganz is the director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research at the University of California, Los Angeles, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is also a professor in UCLA’s Schools of Medicine and Public Health.

Her research will focus on how chemotherapy may negatively affect breast cancer patients’ abilities to concentrate and think clearly, influencing their long-term quality of life. Her past research focused on how breast cancer survivors fare in the months and years after treatment. She found that breast cancer survivors frequently enjoy better quality of life than women who do not have cancer because the experience with the disease often compels women to redefine the priorities in their lives.

New York University School of Medicine, New York, has appointed Silvia Formenti, M.D., as the first Sandra and Edward H. Meyer Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology.

Formenti was an associate professor of radiation oncology and medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine prior to her move to New York. She is investigating the effects of combination therapy on the primary treatment of breast, prostate, and cervical cancer, and whether the response to treatment is associated with biological markers present in the original tumors.

Isabel Mortara has been named the new executive director of the International Union Against Cancer, Geneva, Switzerland.

Mortara has been UICC’s deputy director since 1990 and head of the Education Department since 1985. "The UICC is a truly unique organization, the only one with a global mandate in all aspects of cancer control and one that has an impressive grass roots capacity through its prestigious international membership," Mortara said.

She replaced Archie J. Turnbull, who served as executive director for 10 years.

Grossman to Head Society

Stuart A. Grossman, M.D., has been named the president of the Society for Neuro-Oncology for a 2-year term. Grossman is a professor of oncology, medicine, and neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, Baltimore.

Since 1994, Grossman has directed the New Approaches to Brain Tumor Therapy brain tumor consortium. He is the director of the Clinical and Laboratory Neuro-Oncology Programs at the Oncology Center, and co-directs the Pain Team.

George M. Gill, M.D., has been named vice president for clinical research and regulatory affairs at Genetronics Inc., a San Diego-based drug and DNA delivery company.

Prior to his appointment, Gill was vice president of medical affairs at Ligand Pharmaceuticals, San Diego. He has also served as senior director of clinical and medical affairs of ICI Pharmaceuticals (now Zeneca), vice president of worldwide regulatory affairs of Bristol-Myers Squibb, and director of the Oncology Clinical Research Group at Hoffmann-LaRoche.

He is the principal investigator of M. D. Anderson’s Gynecologic Oncology Group, and is the co-principal investigator of the Specialized Program of Research Excellence grant in ovarian cancer.
