Thomas J. Dougherty, Ph.D., of Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y., received the Thomas B. Tomasi, M.D., Ph.D., Achievement Award from the Roswell Park Alliance. The award honors a Roswell Park scientist whose work has contributed significantly to reducing the cancer toll worldwide and brought hope to cancer patients.

Dougherty developed photodynamic therapy—using light to kill cancer cells. The Food and Drug Administration has approved photodynamic therapy for early and late stage lung cancer and obstructive esophageal cancer.
