Lovell A. Jones, Ph.D., professor of gynecologic oncology, biochemistry, and molecular biology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, is one of three health care professionals to recently receive Howard University Hospitals 2000 Legacy of Leadership Award.

The award is presented to individuals from across the nation who exemplify Howard University Hospitals commitment to excellence in health care education, leadership, and advocacy. The award recognizes his efforts in advancing major health initiatives that have improved the quality of life for minorities and the poor.
He is the co-founder of the Intercultural Cancer Council, which is the largest multicultural and multidisciplinary coalition addressing cancer issues related to minorities and medically underserved areas in the United States.
Swafford Honored
Joseph Swafford, M.D., an associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, recently received the Women and Minorities Volunteer of the Year Award from the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate.
Recipients demonstrated leadership in promoting and enhancing the relationship between the AHA and the minority community. Swafford has volunteered with the Houston division since 1993 when he served as a member of the Special Populations Committee. Since joining the association, he has been committed to educating the public about cardiovascular disease with a special interest in the African-American community.
Tuck Named
David Tuck, M.D., was appointed the associate director for clinical trials at Yale Cancer Center.
Tuck, a board certified medical oncologist and hematologist, joins Yale Cancer Center after 6 years in research at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he concentrated his research on the development of anticancer drugs at the molecular level. He will be responsible for the Yale Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring System, a peer review committee for cancer clinical trials approved by the National Cancer Institute. He will also be working with the Medical Informatics Program at Yale Cancer Center, where he will develop his interest in bioinformatics, genomatics, and computer science.
Janjan Appointed
Nora Janjan, M.D., professor of radiation oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, this fall becomes president-elect of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
She is only the second woman in the organizations 42-year history to hold the post. Following a one-year rotation as president-elect, Janjan will become president of the society in 2001. After a year as president, she will then become chair of the board of directors.
Applications Available
The American Brain Tumor Association is accepting applications for Basic Research Fellowships and Translational Research Grants. The grants begin July 1, 2001.
Basic Research Fellowships are $60,000 awards for 2 years. The fellowships provide salary support to post-doctorates who have demonstrated the potential to conduct basic brain tumor research. Eligible candidates are M.D.s within 2 years of residency completion or Ph.D.s with no more than 30 months post-doctoral laboratory experience.
Translational Research Grants are 1-year $50,000 awards. This will fund preclinical research beyond the molecular level and excludes human studies. Eligible candidates are M.D.s who have up to 5 years post-residency and have attained junior faculty to assistant professor stature or Ph.D.s who have no more than 5 years post-doctoral laboratory experience. All candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada. The deadline for applications is Jan. 4, 2001.
