Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Patricia Reid Ponte has been appointed chief of Nursing and Patient Care Services at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston.
Ponte has been a practicing nurse for 25 years and since 1992 has been the nursing director at Brigham and Womens Hospital, where she managed up to 750 nurses and support staff, expanded educational programs for nurses, and led interdisciplinary efforts to improve the areas of nursing, pharmacy, and materials management.
White Appointed CSO
Raymond White, Ph.D., has joined DNA Sciences, Mountain View, Calif., as its chief scientific officer.
White was previously the chairman of the Department of Oncological Sciences and founding director of science at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
The primary goal of DNA Sciences is to accelerate the advancement of improved medical testing and treatment through genetic discovery. The company was founded in May 1998.
NCI Recognizes Cancer Center
The University of Iowa Cancer Center has been officially recognized as a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
The cancer center intends to support state-of-the-art technology and novel therapies and techniques. There are 60 centers throughout the country that have been named NCI-designated cancer centers.
ASBMT Accepting Applications
Applications are being accepted by the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation for a $25,000-per-year award for new investigators.
The 2-year research award, supported by Fujisawa Healthcare Inc., encourages clinical and laboratory research by new investigators in the field of blood and marrow transplantation. Applicants must be at the junior faculty level (instructor or assistant professor) and be an ASBMT member or sponsored by an ASBMT member.

Call for Proposals
The Lymphoma Research Foundation of America is accepting research proposals for Fellowship Grants and Junior Faculty Grants.
The grants provide up to $45,000 per year for salary and are available to researchers working on lymphoma-specific studies. Applicants must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree. An applicant who holds an M.D. must be at least a third-year fellow.
The Junior Faculty Grant represents the next level of funding for researchers with assistant or associate professor standing. This grant awards up to $75,000 in support of projects led by investigators who have a proven history of research specific to lymphoma.
Applications must be postmarked on or before Dec. 15, 2000. The funding year commences on July 1, 2001, and ends June 30, 2002. ONS to Offer Award
The Oncology Nursing Society Foundation will present the Pat McCue Memorial/New Orleans Chapter Hospice Nursing Career Development Award for the first time in 2001.
The award will provide hospice nurses with funding for continuing education.
