Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Richard Klausner, M.D., director of the National Cancer Institute, will receive the 12th Donald Ware Waddell Award from the Arizona Cancer Center, Tuscon, Ariz., on Jan. 13, 2000.

The award is presented annually to a basic or clinical investigator who has made outstanding contributions to cancer research. Klausner will give two lectures at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center as part of the award.

"It is a great privilege to have a physician and scientist of Dr. Klausner's vision and accomplishment coming here to present these award lectures," said Daniel D. Von Hoff, M.D., director of the cancer center.

Poplack Recognized

The Leukemia Society of America has awarded David G. Poplack, M.D., the John J. Kenny Award, which recognizes members of the medical profession who have contributed to the Society's research, professional education, and/or patient services program.

Poplack is the director of the Texas Children's Cancer Center in Houston, and is an associate editor of this Journal. According to the society, "He has been a visionary in identifying new treatments for children with cancer, and instrumental in defining new therapies for children with acute leukemia."

The society honored Poplack and others at its Annual Leadership Conference for contributions to the mission of the society. Others honored include former all-star baseball catcher Gary Carter; NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon; the Southwest Oncology Group's Pediatric Oncology Group chair Teresa J. Vietti, M.D.; and Society National Board of Trustees member William H. Reimers.

Drug Development Grant Awarded

SBC Communications Inc. has donated $5 million to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, San Antonio, Texas, to endow the chair of the director of the CTRC Institute for Drug Development.

"This SBC Foundation grant will give us the financial backing we need to attract and retain a top cancer researcher who will lead the IDD well into the new millennium," said CTRC board chairman Robert V. West Jr., Ph.D.

The grant moves the CTRC closer to the $15 million required to endow a total of six chairs for the Institute of Drug Development. The endowment process is part of an overall $35 million capital campaign that will support new clinical treatment space and expansion of the center's laboratory research facility, the company said.

Price Elected

Fredric Price, M.D., has been elected the national chairman of a Society of Gynecologic Oncologists committee that will develop a set of practice guidelines for the treatment of gynecologic malignancies.

Price practices in Point Breeze, Pa., and is on the staff at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-South Side, Magee-Womens Hospital, and others.

The committee will report information on the standard treatment of cervical cancer through publications and on the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists' Web site.

Center Names Director

Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., has been named director of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, which is operated jointly by Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Eberlein will continue to serve as Bixby Professor and head of the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and surgeon-in-chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

William A. Peck, M.D., Washington University's executive vice chancellor for medical affairs, said: "Tim Eberlein is an internationally recognized surgical oncologist who has proven to be an invaluable asset to the medical center. His outstanding leadership skills, acumen as a physician and scientist, and clear vision for the future of the Siteman Cancer Center will continue to serve us well."

ACS Names Information Officer

The American Cancer Society has appointed Zachary Patterson as its national chief information officer.

Patterson will be responsible for coordinating the holistic development and deployment of a comprehensive information systems strategy on behalf of the 2 million-member society.

Prior to his appointment, Patterson was the chief information officer and commander of a U.S. Army Strategic Signal Brigade for the Military District of Washington, D.C. He retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel after 25 years of active duty to assume his new position.

Lam Joins UC Davis Staff

Kit S. Lam, M.D., Ph.D., has joined the staff of the University of California Davis Medical Center and School of Medicine as professor of internal medicine and chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology.

Dr. Kit S. Lam

 
Lam is an expert in combinatorial chemistry, and his specific areas of interest include peptides, leukemia, lymphoma, and technology development. Prior to joining the UC Davis staff, he was an associate professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology at the Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
