Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Foundation, Zurich, announced that the 1999 Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Prize was won by George Klein, M.D., of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and Harald zur Hausen, M.D., of the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg.Klein was cited for "the elucidation of the biological mechanisms leading from Epstein-Barr virus infection to human cancer, in particular Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma," and zur Hausen was cited for "the identification of the biological mechanisms leading from infection with human papilloma viruses to human cancer, particularly cervical carcinoma."
AACR-Pezcoller Award
The American Association for Cancer Research-Pezcoller International Award for Cancer Research went this year to Carlo M. Croce, M.D., director of the Kimmel Cancer Center of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia.

The $75,000 award goes to a scientist who has made a major discovery in cancer research. The association noted that Croce's "major contributions to cancer have not only greatly extended our knowledge of cancer genetics, but they also constitute the basis for potential breakthroughs in the development of gene therapy for human cancer."
Cowan to Eppley
The Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, named Kenneth H. Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., as director of the center and of the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer & Allied Diseases.

Cowan has been chief of the Medical Breast Cancer Section of the National Cancer Institute's Medicine Branch since 1988. His new appointment is effective Aug. 1.
Nattinger Heads Medicine
The Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, announced that Ann Butler Nattinger, M.D. was named chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine. She has been director of the division's health services research since 1989.
Her research interests include breast cancer and she has published studies of factors involved in the choice of treatment options by breast cancer patients.
Lee Heads CDC Division
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, announced that Nancy C. Lee, M.D., has been named director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control in its National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
Lee has been the division's associate director for science for the past 6 years.
Leach Becomes EVP
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, named Leon J. Leach executive vice president and chief financial officer. He has held the latter position at M. D. Anderson since 1997.
Leach is responsible for all of the institution's financial and business functions, supporting all program areas of the center, including patient care, research, education, and prevention.
National Cancer Congress
The 1999 National Cancer Congress, to be held in Atlanta Sept. 8 to 10, will emphasize broad-based public health approaches for implementing effective cancer prevention and control strategies and activities.
