NCAB Expresses Concern About FY2000 Budget Request for NCI
The National Cancer Advisory Board sent a letter last month to Congress and the Administration expressing concern about the Administration's request for the National Cancer Institute's FY2000 budget, stating that the requested 2.4% increase "will seriously damage the National Cancer Program."The board stated that "an abrupt shift in funding from the current 15% increase over FY1998 funding levels to a recommended increase of 2.4% for FY2000 will result in a critical loss of momentum."
NCAB members agreed that without a larger increase, there will have to be "a reduction of new programs, loss of ability to renew current programs of excellence, and an inability to rapidly translate new discoveries into applications for patients." The board also felt that the programmatic ramifications of a 2.4% increase would discourage investigators and cause scientists who are still in training to rethink career decisions with adverse effect on the next generation of researchers.
