Middle East Cancer Registries Develop

The Steering Committee for the Middle East Cancer Consortium met in Cyprus recently to review progress by each of the MECC-sponsored tumor registries — in Cyprus, Egypt, Gaza, Israel, Jordan, and West Bank — and lay plans for future activites of the MECC cancer registry project.

The Steering Committee announced plans to compare cancer incidence in Jordan and Israel, using the recently completed 1996 data sets from the registries in both countries. MECC registries (as well as other emerging registries in the developing world) are installing new cancer registry software, called CanReg 3, which is being supplied by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France.

MECC also is planning to issue a call for proposals to conduct breast cancer epidemiologic studies in the region. NCI epidemiologists Elaine Ron, M.D., and Sandra Melnick, Ph.D., attended the Steering Committee meeting to discuss possible epidemiologic studies in both breast cancer and lymphoma. Details on the call for proposals will be posted on the MECC website (www.mecc.org.il).
