Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich, Conn., presented Vincent T. DeVita Jr., M.D., with its 1999 Mary Waterman Award.DeVita, who is director of the Yale Cancer Center, New Haven, Conn., was honored for "his outstanding achievements in the fight against cancer." Specifically, he was cited for his role in developing combination chemotherapy programs that led to effective treatments for Hodgkin's disease, diffuse large-cell lymphoma, and breast cancer.
Lawrence Receives Award
The Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, Long Beach, Calif., named Walter Lawrence Jr., M.D., as national "Cancer Fighter of the Year" for "a lifetime of outstanding leadership and achievements in the war against cancer."

Lawrence developed the Massey Cancer Center at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, where he is now director emeritus. Lawrence also served as president of the national American Cancer Society and the Society of Surgical Oncology, chaired the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, and served as a member of the presidentially appointed National Cancer Advisory Board.
Stomper Receives N.Y. Award
The New York State Breast Cancer Detection and Education Program Advisory Council presented its 1999 Innovation Award in the health professional category to Paul C. Stomper, M.D., who is director of the Mammography Center at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y.
The award recognizes Stomper's "contributions and dedication to the field of breast cancer." The council also recognized a consumer and a non-profit organization for their work in the breast cancer field.
B. J. Kennedy Honored
The University of Minnesota Medical Alumni Society recently honored B. J. Kennedy, M.D., for his "lifelong commitment to cancer education, research, and treatment, and for his contributions to the university's Medical School and the community."
Kennedy is Regents' Professor of Medicine, Emeritus and Masonic Professor of Oncology, Emeritus at the university in Minneapolis.
Conley Named at NCI
The National Cancer Institute announced that Barbara Conley, M.D., has been appointed chief of the Diagnostic Research Branch in NCI's Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis.
Conley had been senior investigator in the division's Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program's Clinical Investigations Branch and an oncologist in NCI's Medicine Branch.
Pitt Recruits Nelson
The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine recruited Joel Nelson, M.D., as professor and chairman of a newly established Department of Urology. The department, in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, will concentrate on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Nelson, who had been assistant professor of urology at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and director of urologic oncology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, will co-direct UPCI's Comprehensive Prostate and Urologic Cancer Center.
RPCI Appoints Faculty
The Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y., named four individuals to its diagnostic radiology faculty, and added a thoracic surgeon to its Department of Surgical Oncology.
Chukwumere E. Nwogu, M.D., was named attending thoracic surgeon in the department's Division of Thoracic Surgery.
Those named to the faculty of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging's Division of Diagnostic Radiology are Atul Gupta, M.D., named director of the Angiography/Interventional Radiology Section; Lalit Gurtoo, M.D., named to the staff of the Body Imaging Section; Alan M. Litwin, M.D., also named to the staff of the Body Imaging Section; and Susan Y. Kim, M.D., who will practice neuro-oncology.
Nadell Heads Foundation
The Judith & George Goldman Foundation Fighting Catastrophic Diseases, Lake Forest, Ill., named Glenn A. Nadell as chief executive officer. Nadell will lead the foundation as it applies its "venture capital approach to motivate innovative research into searching for cures for cancer."
He has been chairman of the tax department of a large law firm, an investment management counselor, and chief executive officer of a wire and cable company.
Aileen Ryan Named
CpG ImmunoPharmaceuticals named Aileen Ryan as vice president for regulatory affairs, a new position in the company. She had been with ASTA Medica Inc.
CpG ImmunoPharmaceuticals is a privately held biotechnology company developing products that stimulate the immune system to treat cancer, infectious diseases, allergy, and asthma.
Series Honors Nealon
The National Cancer Institute named a new series of lectures about the communication of science to the public, the Extraordinary Communicators' Lecture series, to honor the late Eleanor O'D. Nealon, an 18-year NCI staff member who died of breast cancer in October.

Speakers in the series will be outstanding communicators who have advanced an understanding of science. Three speakers will be selected each year and drawn from technology, business, academia, the media, and the advocacy community.
Prior to her death, Nealon was director of NCI's Office of Liaison Activities, which she created in 1994.
Chair Established at Alabama
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center received a $1 million gift to endow the Martha Ann and David L. May Endowed Chair for Cancer Research.
The cancer center plans to use the chair in its recruitment of a nationally or internationally recognized researcher, academician, and clinician with special expertise in clinical trials for breast and prostate cancer.
ABTA Research Awards
The American Brain Tumor Association, Des Plaines, Ill., is now accepting applications for 2-year Basic Research Fellowships and 1-year Translational Research Grants. Deadline for applications is Jan. 5, 2000.
