Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The International Federation of Pigment Cell Societies recently presented its Myron Gordon Award to Vincent J. Hearing, Ph.D., chief of the Pigment Cell Biology Section of the National Cancer Institute's Laboratory of Cell Biology.

The award was given at the triannual meeting of the societies in Nagoya, Japan. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to research on pigment cells. Hearing is current president of IFPCS and soon will be editor of the Journal of Pigment Cell Research.

Mendelsohn Honored

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, New York, presented its Jill Rose Award for research leading to improved therapies for breast cancer to John Mendelsohn, M.D., president of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston.

The foundation funds clinical and genetic research on breast cancer. Since it was founded in 1983 by Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice president of The Estee Lauder Companies Inc., New York, it has awarded more than $13.5 million in grants.

Jordan Named to Professorship

Northwestern University, Chicago, announced that it has established the Diana, Princess of Wales, Professorship of Breast Cancer Research and that it named V. Craig Jordan, Ph.D., D.Sc., to hold the professorship.

Jordan is professor of pharmacology at the university's medical school and director of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Research Program at Northwestern's Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The chair was endowed by a gift from Chicago philanthropist Ann Lurie, a member of the university board of trustees and a major benefactor of cancer research. The cancer center is named in memory of her husband, a Chicago business leader and philanthropist who died of cancer. The center held a special symposium to recognize Jordan's assumption of the professorship.

Pittsburgh Awards

The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, at its recent Leadership Dinner, presented several awards. Among them:

General Norman H. Swarzkopf received the Spirit of Hope Award, given annually to someone who has "personally faced the challenges of cancer and has given inspiration and hope to other cancer patients and families."

Donald Trump, M.D., received the UPCI Scientific Leadership Award. He is the institute's deputy director for clinical investigations, chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, and co-director of UPCI's Prostate and Urologic Cancer Center.

Vande Woude to Michigan

The new director of the Van Andel Research Institute, Grand Rapids, Mich., is George Vande Woude, Ph.D., who stepped down in October as director of the National Cancer Institute's Division of Basic Sciences.

NCI has a search under way to find a successor. Until then, Alan Rabson, M.D., NCI's deputy director, will also serve as acting director of the Division of Basic Sciences.

Morrow Named at ACS

The American College of Surgeons named Monica Morrow, M.D., as director of its Cancer Department. She is professor of surgery at Northwestern University Medical School and director of the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, both in Chicago.

Since becoming a fellow of the college in 1986, Morrow has provided ACS service in the areas of cancer and cancer research, and has been a member of the Commission on Cancer for 7 years. She also is on the Breast Committee and chairs the Membership and Auditing Committee of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.

DeVita Heads Advisory Group

Yale Cancer Center Director Vincent T. DeVita, Jr., M.D., was selected by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to co-chair an advisory committee that will make recommendations for revising and modernizing the National Cancer Act of 1971.

The announcement said that the committee, which comprises national leaders in cancer, will seek opinions throughout the cancer community about new national cancer legislation to be introduced in Congress. Feinstein expects a bipartisan bill to be introduced early next year.

RPCI Names Rusch

The Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y., appointed Dennis F. Rusch as vice president for finance. He had been chief financial officer for Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Scott, Sherwood and Bridley Foundation in Temple, Texas.

At RPCI, Rusch will develop financial systems for the public benefit corporation, assist with the strategic financial agenda and with formulating financial policy. He also will serve as liaison with New York State's Division of Budget.

Galler Joins SELECT

SELECT Therapeutics, Cambridge, Mass., named Robert C. Galler as vice president for corporate development and a member of the board. Galler had been president and chairman of the Lois Joy Galler Foundation for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.

SELECT Therapeutics has developed technologies that are now moving to clinical investigations.
