Awards, Appointments, Announcements

Keio University, Tokyo, recently named two scientists to receive the 1999 Keio Medical Sciences Prize. Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Ph.D., and Shinya Yoshikawa, M.D., will each receive a certificate, a medal and $191,000.

Blackburn of the University of California, San Francisco, was described as a leader in the area of telomere and telomerase research. Yoshikawa was credited with elucidating, with co-workers, the complete three-dimensional structure of mammalian cytochrome C oxidase, the key respiratory enzyme in the mitochondrial membrane.

FECS-Pezcoller Award

The 1999 winner of the Federation of European Cancer Societies-Pezcoller Award is Jean-Claude Horiot, professor of radiotherapy at the University of Dijon, France. The award includes a plaque and $31,000.

Horiot was recognized for his "contribution to radiotherapy and for his commitment and enthusiasm in promoting the highest quality standards of oncology practice in Europe." He is also director of the Centre Georges-Francois Leclerc Tumor Institute in Dijon and is president of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, Brussels.

RPCI Names Cooley

The Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y. appointed Frederick B. Cooley, Ph.D., as director of its Physician Resource Program.

Cooley will be responsible for improving services to the institute's referring physicians. He will chair an internal review board that reviews patient treatment issues at the request of referring physicians. In addition to his doctorate, he holds an M.B.A. degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

Tempero to Serve as Deputy

The University of California, San Francisco, named Margaret A. Tempero, M.D.,as deputy director of the university's Cancer Center and chief of medical oncology in the Department of Medicine, effective next January. She is currently deputy director of the Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.

Tempero will also hold the Doris and Donald Fisher Distinguished Professorship in Clinical Cancer Research, the announcement said.

Wight Becomes Foundation EVP

The G&P Charitable Foundation for Cancer Research, New York, named Kay J. Wight as executive vice president "in a move intended to strengthen its role in supporting innovative and advanced approaches in the fight against cancer."

Wight's background includes "creating and promoting successful high-profile programs in the areas of not-for-profit and corporate philanthropy," the announcement said. She had been vice president of the Revlon Foundation. She also has been a member of the American Cancer Society's National Board of Directors since 1992.

The foundation supports research to develop cancer treatments and reduce side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Thompson Named CEO

Ancile Pharmaceuticals, Inc., San Diego, named Janice E. Thompson, Ph.D., a natural products expert, as president and chief executive officer. She has been with the company since 1998 as vice president for scientific affairs. Her predecessor, Kevin J. Kinsella, who founded the company, remains active as chairman of the board.

Ancile develops botanical therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of common human diseases. It has facilities in both San Diego and Shanghai.

Major Contribution

Ohio State University's Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute announced the receipt of a $6.5 million contribution from the Robert F. Wolfe and Edgar T. Wolfe Foundation.

The gift will benefit the university's Human Cancer Genetics Program. Of the total, $5 million will be used to build and support new laboratories for cancer genetics research. The remainder will added to the existing endowment for the John W. Wolfe Chair in Human Cancer Genetics.

Confronting Cancer

The University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, announced that it is sponsoring again this year a juried exhibition of artwork crafted by individuals touched by cancer. The exhibition has been shown in the Arthur Ross Gallery in Philadelphia and will close Oct. 31.

John H. Glick, M.D., director of the university's cancer center, said that many cancer patients express "powerful emotions by creating poignant artworks that reveal a person's most intimate experience in facing serious illness."

The announcement said that the exhibit, "Confronting Cancer Through Art," can be viewed online at the cancer center's website, www.oncolink.upenn.edu.
