Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The Bayer Institute for Health Care Communication, Las Vegas, presented U. S. Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D., with its Distinguished Physician Communicator Award. Satcher, who also is U. S. assistant secretary for health, was honored for his communications skills and the "positive influence these skills have on patient care."

The institute, a non-profit organization that works to improve communication between physicians and patients, was formed in 1987 by the Bayer Corp. Pharmaceutical Division.

Research Fellowships

The National Childhood Cancer Foundation, Arcadia, Calif., announced five winners of research fellowships at pediatric cancer research and treatment centers. Winners of the 2-year awards are:

Angela Jane Alessandri, M.B.B.S., of Children's Hospital, University of British Columbia, Vancouver; Victor Anthony Lewis, M.D., University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Charles Keller, M.D., University of Utah, Salt Lake City; Christine Jacobs Williamsen, M.D., Children's Hospital, University of Colorado, Denver; and Zhihui Lang, M.D., Ph.D., Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Immunomedics Names European Boss

Immunomedics, Inc., Morris Plains, N.J., named Joop Meijer as general manager of its European subsidiary, Immunomedics, BV, Hillegom, Netherlands. The subsidiary manages the marketing and sales of company products CEA-Scan and LeukoScan in the European Union and other countries. He had been with Mallinckrodt, a similar company.

Immunomedics is a biopharmaceutical company that develops diagnostic imaging and therapeutic products for cancer and infectious diseases.

Chew Named Vice President

Techniclone Corp., Tustin, Calif., appointed Terrence Chew, M.D., as vice president for clinical and regulatory affairs. He had been with SkyePharma, Inc., as vice president for clinical development.

The company is a biopharmaceutical firm that develops technologies for the treatment of cancer, the announcement said.

Major ACS Appointments Made

The American Cancer Society, Atlanta, announced the appointment of A. Gregory Donaldson as national vice president of corporate communications. He had been senior director of corporate communications for Humana, Inc., Louisville, Ky. Donaldson will coordinate national communications programs and practices.

ACS also announced that it named Daniel E. Smith national vice president of federal and state government affairs. Smith had been staff director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. He will coordinate federal and state advocacy programs and practices.

Anido Named Senior VP

MedImmune, Inc., Gaithersburg, Md., named Armando Anido, as senior vice president for sales and marketing. He had been a vice president with Glaxo Wellcome, Inc.

MedImmune is a biotechnology company that develops products in areas of infectious disease, transplantation medicine, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.

Millennium Names Bolen

Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Cambridge, Mass., named Joseph B. Bolen, Ph.D., as vice president for oncology. He had been with Hoechst Marion Rousel as vice president for oncologic diseases.

Millennium develops therapeutic and diagnostic and services, using large-scale genetics, genomics, high throughput screening, and informatics in an integrated science and technology platform, the announcement said.

SusanLoveMD.com

Susan Love, M.D., a breast surgeon and member of the National Cancer Advisory Board, announced she is creating a new Internet portal for breast cancer patients. The site, SusanLoveMD.com, will be launched in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The announcement said the site will provide up-to-date, personalized, understandable information and support for women diagnosed with, or at risk of developing, breast cancer. Love will interact with patients in private conferences and chat rooms and will provide assistance in locating physicians and hospitals offering new therapies. Site visitors will also receive personalized news via e-mail and assistance in contacting advocacy groups.
