Awards, Appointments, Announcements
The Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc., recently presented Helena Chang, M.D., with its 1999 Leadership Award. She is a breast cancer surgeon at the University of California, Los Angeles Jonsson Cancer Center and director of the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center.Chang "has not only made significant contributions to medicine, but she also has demonstrated that she is an important leader in the field of cancer research. She is a role model for Asian Pacific Americans," said LEAP president J. D. Hokoyama.
Singer Heads NCI Divison
The National Cancer Institute announced that Dinah S. Singer, Ph.D., will become director of its Division of Cancer Biology, succeeding Faye Austin, Ph.D., who went to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute last year.

Singer has been associated with NCI since 1975, most recently as chief of the Molecular Regulation Section in the Experimental Immunology Branch. Since 1998, she has been senior scientific officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Bethesda, Md. In her new position, Singer will oversee the administration of more than $600 million of NCI-funded grants and a staff of more than 60 people.
Poste Named Acting CEO
diaDexus LLC, Santa Clara, Calif., a joint venture between SmithKline Beecham and Incyte Pharmaceuticals, announced that George H. Poste, D.V.M., Ph.D., became acting chief executive officer last month, replacing William G. Gerber, who the company said was pursing other interests.
Poste is chairman of the diaDexus Board of Directors and chief science and technology officer of SmithKline Beecham, King of Prussia, Pa., and will continue in these posts until a new CEO is appointed. diaDexus develops molecular diagnostic products, including tests for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of cancer and other diseases.
Kuettel to Chair Department
The Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, N.Y., announced that Michael R. Kuettel, M.D., Ph.D., will become chairman of its Department of Radiation Medicine, Sept. 1. He will enhance and strengthen RPCI's partnerships with local and national radiation study groups and with community physicians.

Kuettel had been on the faculty at the Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in the Department of Radiation Medicine and the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
Wheeler Named VP
Avant Immunotherapies, Inc., Needham, Mass., named Alistair Wheeler, M.D., as vice president for medical affairs. For the past 2 years, he has been an independent consultant to pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations.
The announcement said the company develops products that "harness the human immune response to prevent and treat disease." The company, often with collaborators, is developing vaccines.
AACR Calls for Nominations
The American Association for Cancer Research, Inc., Philadelphia, is calling for nominations for the Gertrude B. Elion Research Award, the AACR Career Development Awards, the AACR Research Fellowships, and the AACR Young Investigator Awards. Deadline for the Young Investigator Awards is Nov. 1. All the others have Dec. 15 deadlines.

Mayo Named Comprehensive
The National Cancer Institute last month designated the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center as a comprehensive cancer center. It had been designated as a clinical cancer center. There are 59 institutions nationwide that are NCI-designated cancer centers. Of those, 36 are comprehensive.
The center director at Mayo, Franklyn Prendergast, M.D., Ph.D., said "we are grateful for this designation and recognize the entire team of people working for the good of our patients at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center."
DCLG Nominations Sought
The National Cancer Institute is seeking nominations (deadline Nov. 1, 1999) for five places opening up next July on its 15-member Director's Consumer Liaison Group, a chartered advisory committee of consumer advocates. The DCLG helps NCI identify advocates to serve on advisory committees and is a channel for voicing their views and concerns.
The institute is seeking cultural, gender, age, and geographic diversity, as well as a broad mix of cancer sites, among the group's members. Nominations can be made by organizations, including local/regional and national groups, or by individuals including self-nominations.

Anniversary Celebrated
The City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute held a 3-day celebration recently marking the institution's 86th anniversary.
The event brought together 1,000 volunteers representing the 300 chapters across the United States that help support City of Hope. Representatives of the institution's support groups turned in more than $76 million in contributions during the event to support programs of patient care, research, and medical education. California Governor Gray Davis declared a "City of Hope Day."
