Friends of Cancer Research Leaders Honored

Three leaders of an advocacy organization for cancer research received 1999 Cancer Crusader Awards for "outstanding leadership in advancing efforts for research in to a cure for cancer."

U.S. Rep. J. C. Watts (R - Okla.), on behalf of La Salsa Holding Co., Los Angeles, presented the awards to Ellen V. Sigal, Ph.D., Sherry Lansing, and Anna D. Barker, Ph.D., for their work in support of Friends of Cancer Research, an organization based in Washington, D.C., and dedicated to increasing public awareness of the value of cancer research.

Dr. Ellen Sigal, Rep. J.C. Watts, and Sherry Lansing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol for presentation of the 1999 Cancer Crusader Awards.

 
Lansing, chairperson of the Motion Picture Group, Paramount Pictures, and a member of the Friends' board, developed and led the Friends' Los Angeles-based advocacy organization, the Creative Community Task Force. Sigal was honored as founder of the Friends organization and for her long advisory service to the National Cancer Institute and Duke University's Cancer Center. Barker, president of Bio-Nova, Inc., was honored for her service as vice chairperson of the Friends board and her co-authorship of a comprehensive national cancer research plan that devolved from last fall's March on Washington by cancer patients and advocates.
