24-Hour Cancer Information
The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service has operated a toll-free telephone service since 1975. In the past, callers dialing 1-800-4-CANCER had three options: They could order publications, learn about FDA-certified mammography facilities, or speak with a Cancer Information Specialist.
Beginning mid-December, however, callers have a fourth option listening to recorded cancer information that is available 24 hours a day. So now, any time, any day, callers can hear brief recorded messages about cancer issues in the news and other information about cancer.
Recorded messages provide general information about cancer, and inform callers about cancer screening, prevention, and treatment clinical trials. Messages also describe different ways to obtain information from NCI, such as through the fax on demand service known as CancerFax, and via the Internet at www.nci.nih.gov. Some of the topics now available as recorded messages include: STAR, an upcoming breast cancer risk reduction study on tamoxifen and raloxifene; screening for colorectal cancer; and complementary and alternative medicine.
Spanish-speaking callers will be able to get recorded messages in Spanish sometime in the spring.
