NSABP Names Centers For Study of Tamoxifen And Raloxifene (STAR)
The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project has selected 193 institutions to participate in its second major breast cancer prevention trial, the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene. The new study, which is expected to begin early next year, will randomize 22,000 postmenopausal women at high risk for breast cancer to receive either raloxifene or tamoxifen.STAR will examine whether raloxifene, a drug similar to tamoxifen, is also effective in preventing invasive breast cancer in women who have not had the disease and whether it offers any benefits over those of tamoxifen. Participants in the STAR study, who must be 35 years of age or older, will be followed closely through mammograms, physical exams, and gynecologic exams on a regular basis for at least 7 years.
