Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Harald zur Hausen, D.Sc., M.D., received the American Association of Cancer Research Award for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of his life's work devoted to the study of viruses and cancer.
  • Catherine Lee, M.D., and Nazanin Khakpour, M.D., have joined the Moffitt Cancer Center's Don and Erika Wallace Comprehensive Breast Program. Dr. Lee is a breast surgeon, formerly at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Khakpour was the director of breast surgery and the breast-multidisciplinary cancer program and assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
  • Michael P. Lisanti, M.D., Ph.D., professor of breast cancer research at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, has been named editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Pathology.
  • Michael A. and Zena Wiener have made an initial commitment of $5 million to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to support translational research in bladder cancer.
  • Wen Wee Ma, M.B.B.S., and Grace K. Dy, M.D., have been appointed as attending physicians in the drug development program in the department of medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
  • Thomas Jefferson University has established a new center, known as the Jefferson Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Center, to study the biology and potential uses of adult stem cells in a variety of diseases including cancer. The center will be led by cell biologist Michael P. Lisanti.
  • Susan McCloskey, M.D., and Kilian Salerno May, M.D., both members of the radiation faculty at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, received fellow awards from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network at its 13th annual conference held in March.
  • Jeffrey A. Toretsky, M.D., a pediatric oncologist and researcher at Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received a Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
  • The National Lung Cancer Partnership and the LUNGevity Foundation announced that Hildegard Schuller, M.D., Ph.D., is the winner of their third annual research grant competition.
  • Adam Marcus, Ph.D., of Emory University is the recipient of the National Lung Cancer Partnership's 2007 Career Development Award.
  • V. Craig Jordan, Ph.D., D.Sc., was elected as an honorary member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain for his role in promoting the development of the drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene.
