Awards, Appointments, Announcements

  • Peter G. Shields, M.D., has been appointed as deputy director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center. Shields previously served as the associate director for population sciences and head of the cancer genetics and epidemiology program. Jeanne Mandelblatt, M.D., former head of the cancer control program at the cancer center, will take Shields’ position as the associate director for population sciences. Christopher Loffredo, Ph.D., was named head of the cancer genetics and epidemiology program. Marc Schwartz, M.D., will lead the cancer control program.
  • Bruce D. Cheson, M.D., director of hematology research at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, was named chairman-elect of the Lymphoma Research Foundation scientific advisory board.
  • E. Antonio Chiocca, M.D., Ph.D., chair of neurosurgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center, received the 2008 Farber Award for his work in brain tumor research.
  • Michael Kuettel, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the department of radiation medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has been appointed to the steering committee for the National Consensus Standards for Clinical Level Cancer Care, part of the National Quality Forum.
  • Gina Szymanski, a nurse manager at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, received the Linda Arenth Excellence in Cancer Nursing Management Award from the Oncology Nursing Society.
  • Kristen S. Coller, M.D., has joined The Ohio State University Medical Center's pain and palliative medicine program. She specializes in pain and symptom management in patients with life-limiting diseases.
  • Wiam Bshara, M.D., Helena Hwang, M.D., and Hyunseok Peter Kang, M.D., have been appointed to the faculty of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
  • Yupo Ma, M.D., Ph.D., chief of hematopathology at the Nevada Cancer Institute, received an NIH grant that will fund models of myelodysplastic syndrome progression and leukemic stem cells. The grant will fund five years of research on these hematological conditions.
  • The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center was named one of the top employers in Texas by Texas Monthly in the magazine's annual list of the "Best Companies to Work For in Texas."
  • H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute has honored two of its employees. David Shibata, M.D., head of colorectal oncology, was named the 2007/2008 Physician of the Year. Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., division chief of thoracic oncology, has been named 2008 Scientist of the Year.
  • Stuart Gold, M.D., professor of pediatrics, has been named division chief of pediatric hematology and oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
  • Thomas Shea, M.D., has been named associate director of clinical outreach for the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
  • H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute was recognized as the best place to work for oncology nurses by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.
  • The Simons Foundation has committed $10 million to support preclinical research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Brain Tumor Center.
