Awards, Appointments, Announcements
Patricia Steeg, Ph.D., head of the women's cancers section in the National Cancer Institute's laboratory of molecular pharmacology, was awarded the 2008 Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Basic Science. Richard Gelber, Ph.D., professor in the department of biostatistics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Aron Goldhirsch, M.D., of the department of medicine at the European Institute of Oncology, received the 2008 Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research. Alan F. List, M.D., formerly the division chief of malignant hematology at Moffitt Cancer Center, has been named executive vice president and physician-in-chief.
Candace S. Johnson, Ph.D., has been appointed deputy director of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Also at Roswell, Asoke K. Mal, Ph.D., has been appointed as an assistant professor of oncology in the department of cell stress biology, and David Mattson, Jr., M.D., has been appointed director of the breast radiation oncology program in the department of radiation medicine.
V. Craig Jordan, Ph.D., D.Sc., of Fox Chase Cancer Center, is the 38th recipient of the David A. Karnofsky Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
The American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Foundation has selected 13 clinicians to receive the 2008 Career Development Award. The recipients are Gregory A. Abel, M.D.; Gregory Armstrong, M.D.; Gautam Borthakur, M.D.; George J. Chang, M.D.; John de Groot, M.D.; Bryan Hennessy, M.D.; E. Scott Kopetz, M.D.; Dung Le, M.D.; Cynthia Ma, M.D., Ph.D.; Blase N. Polite, M.D.; Janette Vardy, M.D., Ph.D.; Christine Walsh, M.D.; Yu-Ning Wong, M.D.
Jeffrey D. Bradley, M.D., associate professor of radiation oncology, has been named the first director of the Kling Center for Proton Therapy. The center is scheduled to open in summer 2009 at the Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
James P. Borgstede, M.D., former chair of the American College of Radiology's board of chancellors, was recently elected treasurer of the International Society of Radiology at its annual meeting.
Michael A. Caligiuri, M.D., CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University and director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been elected to the National Cancer Institute's board of scientific advisors.
Jay R. Harris, M.D., received the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Research Award, which he accepted at the 2008 Breast Cancer Symposium held in September.
