We appreciate the opportunity to respond to this correspondence. As stated in the statistical methods section of our article, we planned and conducted a two-stage crossover analysis based on within-subject differences. We also examined the changes from baseline in each period, which provided entirely comparable results. The results of this simpler analysis were provided in our table 2, as Jones and Haughie correctly pointed out. Results using the two-stage crossover analysis and an alternative approach by Senn (1) (Table 1) illustrate that the conclusions from the article are identical using both methods.

We thank Jones and Haughie for bringing up the issue of using a pretest of carryover effect in the two-stage crossover analysis. We recognize that the test of carryover effects has limitations and agree that, if used, the pretest of carryover effects should be applied very cautiously.

The message from these data, unfortunately, is consistently negative—there was no effect of testosterone alone noted in this population. More research is clearly needed to help women with this important problem.
