CORRESPONDENCE

Editor's Note:

In its August 15, 2007, issue, the Journal reported on the current debate among researchers over mammography screening and the potential effect of that debate on screening in the United States. [See "American Researchers Question Effect of Scandinavian Mammography Debate," Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2007;99(16):1216–1217]. Dr. László Tabár, a coauthor of the Swedish Two-County Trial, has objected to a statement by Carolina Hinestrosa of the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund claiming that Dr. Tabár has not made the data from the study available for independent review "in the 22 years since the original paper was published." He maintains that he and his colleagues have shared complete, primary raw data with the Independent End-Point Committee of the Swedish Cancer Society that audited the results of the Two-County trial. Dr. Tabár states that some of these results have been published (15). Ms. Hinestrosa is also quoted as follows: "NBCCF has been asking for the release of the individual patient data since at least 2002." According to Dr. Tabár, these data have long been on file with the End-Point Committee; however, it would be contrary to Swedish law for Dr. Tabár to release the individual patient data from the Two-County trial to the NBCCF.
