FDA Considers Recommendations on Mammography Quality

The law that charges the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with maintaining quality of mammography—the National Mammography Quality Standards Act—will be up for reauthorization in 2007. The reauthorization has provided Congress and the FDA with the opportunity to take a close look at areas that could use some improvement—or a complete makeover.

Congress asked the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies, to examine current mammography practices and to make recommendations for future improvements.
