Flurry of Activity Follows Report On Quality of Cancer Care
In the spring of 1999 the Institute of Medicines National Cancer Policy Board issued its report "Ensuring Quality Cancer Care." The report charged that quality care is available only erratically around the country and detailed recommendations on how to measure and improve the quality of care.

Eighteen months later organizations around the country are developing ways to implement the reports recommendations. The IOM itself has already issued a follow-up report, "Enhancing Data Systems to Improve the Quality of Cancer Care." The National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the American Cancer Society are preparing lay-language brochures containing treatment guidelines. And both the National Cancer Institute and the American Society of Clinical Oncology are undertaking major efforts to study the quality of cancer care in the United States.
