Awards, Appointments, Announcements

The Leukemia Society of America has awarded the 1999 de Villiers International Achievement Award and Grant to Irving L. Weissman, M.D., professor of pathology and developmental biology at Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, Calif.

The university will receive $250,000 to allow Weissman to continue and expand his research into how leukemias and lymphomas acquire the properties of perpetual growth and self-renewal.

Balch Appointed

Charles M. Balch, M.D., has been named executive vice president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology effective March 1.
