Carl Kupfer, M.D., the only person ever to serve as director of the National Eye Institute at the National Institutes of Health, stepped down from his position July 15 after 30 years of service.

Dr. Carl Kupfer

 
After Congress established the National Eye Institute in 1968, Kupfer was appointed its first director in January 1970. Early on, Kupfer established an Office of Biometry and Epidemiology and launched the landmark Diabetic Retinopathy Study, setting a standard for modern clinical trials in vision research. As NEI Director, Kupfer also oversaw the development of the NEI’s National Eye Health Education Program, a partnership of about 60 professional, civic, and voluntary organizations and government agencies concerned . . .
