ß-Carotene: a Miss for Epidemiology
Correspondence to: James R. Marshall, Ph.D., Cancer Prevention and Control, Arizona Cancer Center, University of Arizona, 1515 North Campbell Ave. 2964, P.O. Box 245024, Tucson, AZ 85724-5024.
The report by Lee et al. (1) in this issue of the Journal
makes it clearer yet that ß-carotene supplements have no value as
cancer chemopreventive agents. Indeed, it would now seem difficult to
justify any additional investigation of ß-carotene for
chemoprevention. Lee et al. studied nearly 40 000 healthy
womenhealth professionalswho were, after randomized and blinded
assignment, treated for 2.1 years with placebo or a substantial
experimental dose of ß-carotene. The dose more than tripled the
blood ß-carotene levels of the experimental subjects. After
treatment was halted, the subjects were followed for another 2 years.
