Trials on Physical Activity, Weight, and Breast Cancer Risk
The main risk factors for breast cancer—age, family history, and ethnic group or race—are not modifiable. A few modifiable factors, such as alcohol and dietary intake, physical activity, and body weight, have been identified as possible risk factors, but they have not been examined extensively in clinical trials. Ballard-Barbash et al. (p. 630) present background, rationale, and designs for two trials to examine the effects of physical activity and weight control on breast cancer risk: a 5-year prevention trial of women at high risk for breast cancer and a survivorship trial of women diagnosed with the disease.
