High Suicide Rate Among Cancer Patients Fuels Prevention Discussions

The suicide rate in cancer patients is twice that observed in the general population in the United States, according to a new study, one of several published recently that have focused on the issue. Others have explored risk factors for suicide in this population, spurring calls for oncologists to increase their awareness of patients’ mental health and psychosocial concerns.

"These studies clearly point to the clinical obligation of oncologists to think about psychiatric problems like depression and suicidal ideation as an outcome to which their patients are susceptible," said Matthew J. Miller, M.D., Sc.D., of the Harvard School of Public Health in Cambridge, Mass.
